Kim Simpson – Service Engineer, Rotork UK, Glasgow
I first got into engineering a year or so after I left school. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life and decided to go to a career open day. It was at the open day where I got talking to some representatives from a mechanical engineering company. It dawned on me then that I was interested in maths and physics and how things like pumps, valves and mechanical machinery worked. I decided to enrol in college to study an HND in mechanical engineering.
After I completed this I applied for an apprenticeship with the Merchant Navy Training Board and I qualified as a Marine Engineering Officer. My role was to oversee maintenance schedules for the running of engine room machinery on a Merchant Vessel.
After being in this role for a few years I decided to join the Royal Navy, doing the same job but in a different environment. There are many more departments on a war ship compared to a Merchant ship and I found it very interesting.
After working at sea and away from home for over 10 years I became a Mechanical Project Manager working on a Military base, and I soon realised that I much preferred working on the tools. I became lucky enough to have the opportunity to work for Rotork UK and started in May 2017. I am a service engineer working on range of different actuators, covering servicing for Scotland. My job is to overhaul the actuators’ changing seals, bearings and oil, diagnose and repair any faults and rectify them as quickly and efficiently as possible and return them to the customer. I also help the field service engineers when required.
I am always learning new things at Rotork so no two days are the same. I am fairly new to the Rotork team in Glasgow and have received a lot of different training and been made to feel extremely welcome. I look forward to learning everything I need to know about actuators and becoming the subject matter expert.
