Regional Accountant

Position Summary

The role is part Finance, Planning and Analysis (FP&A) and part focussed on improving the control environment.

The Opportunity

The role will support the Divisional Finance Director (DFD) analysing the performance of the division and also support the Regional Finance Manager (RFM) in covering their geographic territory. 

It therefore aligns with the DFDs responsibilities in that it is primarily focused on the division but with particular attention on a geographic region.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support DFD with financial control of all of the companies in their division and particularly within the designated region
  • Provide analysis and insight into financial performance and trends of the division
  • Work with the local management to understand the drivers and rectification plans where necessary
  • Assist subsidiaries in the region in understanding financial results and developing plans for bringing results back to forecasted and/or budgeted levels
  • Provide support for subsidiary accountants within the region across all aspects of the business
  • Play an active role in the management of ERP implementation in the region
  • Detailed reviews of balance sheet accounts and monitoring of working capital/cash balances and where the local team is too small, act as the independent reviewer within the region

Control and Governance

  • Support DFD with financial control of all of the companies in their division and particularly within the designated region
  • Support RFM and local controllers with control of statutory and management accounting for the region’s separate legal entities. This includes knowledge of and compliance with current regulations, tax and other fiscal controls of the businesses
  • Support RFM with internal control and risk assessment for each legal entity in the region
  • Follow up action points arising from internal audits to ensure they are implemented on a timely basis
  • Monitor and improve each company’s systems and procedures relating to its accounting and reporting to ensure that total integrity is maintained within the systems in terms of:
    • Compliance with legal requirements
    • Avoidance of fraud
    • Provision of accurate and timely management information
    • Stewardship of company assets
  • Ongoing audit of transactions and processes to achieve the above
  • Identifying improvements in the control environment of the region’s subsidiaries to ensure accurate and timely management and financial reporting

Budgeting and Forecasting

Assisting the DFD and RFM in the annual budget process to provide a full and correct view of the region’s businesses. This will involve:

  • Co-ordinating the work of the local sales managers and controllersinvolved in the budget process, to ensure that they are correctly briefed on the needs of the process and that their input to it is correct, timely and in the required format
  • Give support at budget meetings in order to assist subsidiary company teams in correctly representing their objectives through the financial schedules
  • Assist in preparing quarterly forecasts in the region’s subsidiaries and identify areas for improving the quality of the forecasts
  • Provide support to the RFM with their regional/divisional reporting requirements including analysis of performance compared with budget / forecast

Group Activities

  • Assisting RFM, Regional managers and divisional directors or Group Finance with ad hoc financial questions
  • Perform internal audits of companies within the Group (but outside your region)
  • Train and motivate Finance staff. Take responsibility for monitoring and controlling the performance of staff under his/her control
  • Prepare agenda/presentations and have an active role in regional finance meetings

Experience Requirements

  • Hold a finance degree and/or professional qualification with at least 3 years post qualification experience
  • Candidate will have experience of being the Senior Accounting person in a small business or a Number 2 in Finance in a large business
  • Managed the financial impact and outcomes of a variety of business or commercial issues
  • Demonstrated the ability to review financial areas and identify control weaknesses suggesting actions for improvement
  • Proficient in spreadsheets, MS Office and used several ERP systems
  • Familiar with financial consolidation tools (SAP BPC, Hyperion) and capable of writing extract reports
