Essential control of water at water treatment works is provided by Rotork technology

Overview

As part of a project to upgrade water treatment facilities, meet an increased demand for water and improve the quality of drinking water to customers in central Somerset, Wessex Water required an upgrade of flow control at Maundown Water Treatment Works. Rotork provided over 200 Profibus enabled intelligent electric IQ valve actuators.

Challenge

Maundown Water Treatment Works invested in a £25 million project to improve the quality of water supplied to over 200,000 customers in central Somerset. The site treats water from Wimbleball and Clatworthy reservoirs.

Solution

Maundown Water Treatment Works was originally built in the 1960s and first extended in the early 1970s. The site has recently been entirely redeveloped to further improve the quality of drinking water, upgrade the water treatment facilities and meet the increased demand for water from the 200,000 customers served in central Somerset and required flow control systems to deliver this effectively.

Result

More than 200 PLC controlled, Profibus-enabled Rotork intelligent electric valve actuators have been installed throughout the £25 million project at Maundown. These IQ and IQT actuators operate penstocks and butterfly valves to control the flow of water and sequential backwashing operations throughout the new state-of-the-art treatment plant, comprising raw water screening, dissolved air flotation, rapid gravity filtration and granular activated carbon treatment followed by chlorine contact tanks.
