I joined Rotork in 2012 as a technical apprentice and recently graduated in July 2016. On completing my A-Levels, I chose to do an apprenticeship at Rotork over going to university. I chose to do this, as it allowed me to gain greater knowledge and experience in the industry as well as learning how the business is run. It also allowed me to continue with further education at college whilst still getting paid. Learning practically, and in real life situations, makes the learning more interesting.
On completing my apprenticeship, I have worked in all the different engineering departments including electronics and current products. I have also been in the Sales and contracts department. We learn how the actuators are built whilst working on the shop floor at the beginning of our apprenticeship, which gives a great base knowledge of the actuators. The first 9 months of the apprenticeship was spent full time at college where I carried out the first year of BTEC in engineering design and my PEO level 2 (Performing engineering operations). The following years have been spent with day release at college one day a week, then 4 days a week spent at Rotork.
At the end of the apprenticeship, I have achieved the following qualifications:
HNC in Electrical Engineering
BTec National Diploma Level 3 in Engineering Design
NVQ Level 3
PEO Level 2
PLTS (Personal Learning and thinking skills)
ERR (Employer rights and responsibility)
During my time at Rotork I have learnt and improved on many skills. I feel like I have grown massively in confidence and especially on my practical side and now feel comfortable with taking apart and problem solving of different pieces of equipment. I have learnt how to use Solidedge (CAD program) and the benefits it has to the company.
The highlight of working at Rotork so far was being able to travel with the sales support team to Germany to help set up an expedition. The social side is also great; I have made new friends since working here. Now I’ve completed my apprenticeship, I have a full time job with Rotork in Bath.
