Rotork actuators improve efficiency and reliability at Jersey Water treatment works

Supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal 6, clean water and sanitation, and keeping the world flowing for future generations.

Rotork has worked with Jersey Water to replace obsolete actuators at two water treatment sites on the Channel Island. Rotork IQ3 intelligent electric actuators have given Jersey Water increased levels of reliability and efficiency of the flow control on their sites.

Jersey Water was founded in the mid-19th century and now supplies up to 20 million litres of water per day to the residents of the island. The company operates two water treatment sites, both of which have been recently overhauled. In 2019 the Augres site was updated and in 2021 actuators were installed at the Handois water treatment works.

Water in the treatment works at Handois is supplied from Handois Storage Reservoir and the raw water transfer main via Mont Gavey Storage Tank, while the Augrès Treatment Works is supplied from the raw water transfer main via the Beechfield Raw Water Storage Tank.

These treatment works use a two-stage water treatment method of chemically assisted sedimentation and rapid gravity filtration, then followed by chloramination disinfection with chlorine and ammonia and finally UV reactors for cryptosporidium control. The newly installed IQ3 actuators control the flow of water at the heart of this process. They operate penstocks to aid the flow of raw water into the filter beds. Part-turn IQT actuators were installed on the backwash, drain, air scour areas, as well as the outlet flow control. The watertight protected IQ3 is double-sealed and certified to IP66/68 standards, making it ideal for water applications.

The installation of the actuators at Handois required delivery and commissioning within a tight time-frame, which was fulfilled swiftly by Rotork Sales and Service Department. After these upgrades, Jersey Water now operates nearly 200 Rotork actuators at Augrès, Handois and the La Rosiere Desalination Plant. Rotork has been supporting Jersey Water since the early 1990s and now benefits from regular Health Checks to ensure their actuators are operating to high standards of functionality, efficiency and reliability.
