Jing
Engineering Manager, China

For Jing Chen, engineering was a natural path to pursue. Her interest in mathematics led her to completing a master’s in design engineering before joining Rotork’s Shanghai base in China, where she leads a small team developing new products.

She finds the work rewarding, continually developing, analysing and testing new ideas. She explained: “Some people might find our work a bit boring but not for us; it’s about progressing and improving the product and any setback is an opportunity to try again, to refine and to build better.”

In Jing’s experience, engineering is seen as an exciting career for both men and women and it’s normal for half the engineers in an organisation to be female. She said: “We contribute equally to problem-solving and innovation, so the theme for International Women in Engineering Day – #TogetherWeEngineer – is very appropriate.”

At Rotork, diversity goes beyond gender. Jing emphasises that developing a product is a collaborative effort, involving the inputs of many different people from the design, production, sourcing and quality teams to ensure that all perspectives are heard and given equal attention.

The key to successful engineering is communication, Jing said: “We learn so much from each other and understanding what different departments need from our new products helps foster teamwork and efficiency – and ultimately helps us design better.”

For Jing, diversity isn’t just a talking point: it’s how great engineering happens.
