Graduate Engineer, UK

Neeti Gandhi wanted to be an engineer before she even knew what engineering was, thanks to the excitement for the subject radiated by her family’s neighbour when Neeti was a child in Mumbai, India.

Today, Neeti has followed her dream and is preparing to take up the role of Project Engineer at Rotork’s Bath head office in the UK after successfully completing her placement on the company’s Graduate Programme.

It’s been the right decision, as she explained: “Although I’ve only been with Rotork since 2023, the Graduate Programme gave me many placements in different parts of the organisation, which means I always learned new things. That made it a continuously fun experience – it never got mundane!”

However, it’s not been without some challenges, as Neeti admitted when she found herself out of her depth during a critical stage of a project: “I was struggling on this particular project, so I asked for help. It was great because everyone in my department put their heads together to share ideas and offer solutions. This helped me find clarity because I was able to collaborate with those people who had a lot more experience and knowledge than me. That moment highlighted the power of collaboration, especially across diverse teams, and my experience certainly ties in with #TogetherWeEngineer – the theme for International Women in Engineering Day this year.”

Coming from a different cultural background has also shaped Neeti’s perspective: “Diversity isn’t just about where you’re from; it’s about how people think and approach challenges. When people bring different viewpoints and are open to finding common ground, innovation flows more easily.”

Her advice to aspiring engineers? “Explore all the different aspects of engineering first. Don’t feel pressured to find your niche too early. Let curiosity guide you.”

Neeti said she continues to be curious, and is delighted that her former Mumbai neighbour, who now works in the United States, is still cheering her on.
