Joe

Apprentice Manufacturing Engineering Technician - Manchester, UK

What is your role?

I was in full-time education in Stockport before starting an apprenticeship. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the guitar, BMX riding, camping and hiking.

Why did you apply for an apprentice role with Rotork?

I have always been interested in engineering and understanding how different things work. I applied for the apprenticeship as it would offer me hands-on work as well as experience using software such as CAD. Overall, it’s a good opportunity to start a career in a field of work that interests me.

What does a typical week look like for you as an apprentice at Rotork?

A typical week involves working alongside experienced members of the team and fulfilling a variety of different tasks. I find this great as I get to try a range of jobs whilst having help and support around me when I need it. Each Thursday I complete my weekly online learning.

What do you enjoy the most in your apprentice role?

I enjoy the more practical side of work and learning by using my hands. The design work also really interests me, and I enjoy coming up with solutions to different problems.

What have you learnt from being an apprentice?

I have learnt a number of new skills, including assembly of valves and using CAD software. I now understand the importance of working as a team and I’ve developed my problem-solving skills. I’ve also realised that you can never know enough!

How are you supported in the workplace and at college to achieve your qualification?

Colleagues are always happy to help and talk me through anything I am unsure of. Extra support is also available from my online tutor and my assessor visits the site monthly to check my progress.

What are you looking forward to most in your career at Rotork?

I’m most looking forward to gaining more knowledge and stretching myself to understand better the fields of work that I find interesting.
